Charles Eisenstein's The Ascent of Humanity is intended to turn Charles Darwin, Adam Smith and Karl Marx all upside down. Eisenstein offers an alternative paradigm of symbiosis and collaboration as the explanation of the success of all species. Competition is overrated and random selection is much less likely the explanation for species success than combinations of new species with the purpose of improvement. A new consciousness is inevitable because the age of technology has reached its zenith with probable catastrophic consequences unless we change.
