Geoffrey West, a world renowned physicist at Los Alamos National Labs and formerly the head of the Santa Fe Institute, has turned his attention in recent years to the application of complexity theory to cities, discovering that the larger the cities, the greater the creativity, innovation and efficiencies of scale while at the same time, in exactly the same proportion, the greater the incidence of crime, disease and dysfunction.
