A Canadian gold mining corporation is suing the government of El Salvador in a World Bank tribunal alleging $100 million in damages because that country will not permit mining in the lands that they have leased. The El Salvadorean government fears pollution of rivers that supply as much as 15% of the country's water. Under the Central American Free Trade Agreement the World Bank has authority to decide this case and require a devastating payment in damages. The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES) has brought together organizations throughout Latin America and the United States to support the government and people in their opposition to this modern form of corporate colonialism.
